Chameleons will make a long-awaited return to Yorkshire next year when they headline Stylus in Leeds on Wednesday 21 October 2026. More than four decades since their formation, the Middleton band remain one of post-punk’s most quietly influential forces — a group whose atmospheric sound, emotional depth and towering guitar work continue to inspire new generations of artists.
Formed in 1981, Chameleons earned early acclaim with their sweeping, melodic take on post-punk, built around Reg Smithies and Dave Fielding’s chiming dual-guitar interplay and Mark Burgess’s unmistakable vocal delivery. Their first three albums — Script of the Bridge, What Does Anything Mean? Basically and Strange Times — have long been regarded as cult classics, producing songs that remain staples of alternative playlists: ‘Don’t Fall’, ‘Swamp Thing’, ‘Up the Down Escalator’, ‘A Person Isn’t Safe Anywhere These Days’ and fan favourite ‘Second Skin’, a track many consider one of the great underground anthems of the era.
Though the band never chased mainstream attention, their influence has been lasting. Their brooding, widescreen sound — echoing basslines, shimmering guitars and raw, poetic lyricism — paved the way for countless indie and post-rock acts, while their fiercely loyal fanbase has turned every reunion and tour into a genuine event.
For their Leeds return, Chameleons promise a set that spans their entire catalogue, mixing up the early classics with later material and songs from their newest album Arctic Moon, released on Metropolis Records. It’s a chance to witness a band who have lost none of their intensity — still atmospheric, still emotionally charged, and still delivering the kind of hypnotic live shows that earned them their reputation.
Very special guest Lol Tolhurst will open the night with ‘The Songs of The Cure’, revisiting the seminal early catalogue he helped create. It’s a pairing that brings two cornerstones of the post-punk and goth movement together on one stage — a perfect fit for a city with a long love of alternative music.
